Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group:
Alzheimer's disease affects an estimated four million Americans. One in 10 people over 65, and nearly half of those over 85, have Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Association also reports that more than 70% of Alzheimer's patients live at home, leaving family and friends to provide nearly 75% of their home care. As a result, the caregiver's role is both vital and demanding. More than 80% of caregivers report that they frequently experience high levels of stress, and nearly half say they suffer from depression. Participants learn how to deal with the lifestyle adjustments that arise when caring for an Alzheimer's patient while sharing helpful information with each other.
Program offered on a monthly basis. See 'upcoming events' for dates.
Babysitting & Parent Helpers Training Program:
This program is a great way for students in grades five through eight to get involved in child care and gain a sense of responsibility. Parent's helpers learn the beginning basics of entertaining children while an adult is in the home. Babysitters are trained in the finer points of childcare and how to react in situations in which they are working alone. NVNA nurses, the Norwell Fire Department and other qualified instructors teach lessons on first aid, infant and childcare, fire safety, growth & development and babysitting business basics. Certificates are awarded to all students upon course completion. Qualifying babysitters' names are submitted to job banks through the Norwell and Scituate Recreation Departments.
Program offered annually in the fall. See 'upcoming events' for dates.
Diabetes Support Group:
This monthly support group allows participants to ask questions and discuss concerns surrounding diabetes management, while receiving support from fellow patients and trained clinicians. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), there are approximately 18.2 million people in the U.S. suffering from diabetes, while only one-third of this population has been diagnosed. Various guest speakers and topics are explored in a friendly, informational environment.

"Heart Beat" Program:
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a chronic condition that affects nearly 5 million people in the U.S. CHF is the number-one cause of hospitalization in people aged 65 and older, which makes it a special concern for the Norwell VNA because 93 percent of its patients are aged 60 or older. The "Heart Beat" program features two tiers: educational seminars and at-home monitoring sessions for people with CHF.
